Add-ons only sit on a comprehensive policy, so first be clear on [third-party vs comprehensive cover](/articles/auto-insurance/third-party-vs-comprehensive-car-insurance-india), then shortlist insurers from the [best car insurance companies](/articles/auto-insurance/best-car-insurance-companies-india).

## What add-ons are

Add-ons (riders) extend a comprehensive car insurance policy beyond its standard own-damage cover. Each one raises the premium, so the goal is to buy only the ones that match your car's age, your usage, and your local risks.

## The add-ons that matter most

### Zero depreciation (bumper-to-bumper)
Normally the insurer deducts depreciation on replaced parts, so you pay a share of plastic, rubber, and metal costs. Zero dep waives that deduction, so you get a fuller claim. It is usually worth it for new and near-new cars. Check the car-age eligibility and any cap on the number of claims.

### Engine protection
Standard policies do not cover engine damage from water ingress or oil leakage. Engine protect does. It is valuable if you live in a flood-prone or waterlogging-prone city, or drive an expensive engine.

### Return to invoice
If your car is stolen or written off, this pays the original invoice value rather than the depreciated IDV. Useful for newer cars where the gap between invoice and IDV is large.

### Consumables cover
Covers items like engine oil, nuts, bolts, and lubricants that are normally excluded. Small individually, but they add up in a big repair.

### Roadside assistance
Towing, flat-tyre help, and emergency support. Inexpensive and genuinely useful for daily-use cars and long highway drives.

### No Claim Bonus protection
Lets you keep your accumulated NCB even after a claim. Worth it if you have built a high bonus. See the [renewal and NCB guide](/articles/auto-insurance/car-insurance-renewal-guide) for how the bonus works.

## Which add-ons to buy

| Add-on | Best for |
|---|---|
| Zero depreciation | New and near-new cars |
| Engine protection | Flood-prone cities, premium engines |
| Return to invoice | New cars, high theft-risk areas |
| Consumables | Newer cars, comprehensive-minded owners |
| Roadside assistance | Daily drivers, frequent highway use |
| NCB protection | Owners with a high accumulated bonus |

## Watch-outs

- Add-ons raise the premium, so do not stack every rider by default.
- Read the wording: claim-count limits, car-age eligibility, and exclusions vary by insurer.
- A cheaper base quote with a low [IDV](/articles/auto-insurance/idv-car-insurance-explained) can undo the value of good add-ons.
