Use this with the full [car insurance guide](/auto-insurance). Renewal is the best moment to fix a plan that no longer fits, so keep the [best car insurance companies](/articles/auto-insurance/best-car-insurance-companies-india) shortlist handy.

## Renew before it lapses

The single most important rule: renew before the policy expires. A lapsed policy can mean a break in legal cover, a fresh inspection before you can insure again, and, crucially, the loss of your accumulated No Claim Bonus.

## What is No Claim Bonus

No Claim Bonus (NCB) is a discount you earn for every claim-free year, rising step by step to a substantial percentage off your own-damage premium after several years. It rewards careful driving and can meaningfully cut your renewal cost.

Key NCB rules:

- It accrues only in claim-free years and resets if you make a claim, unless you hold [NCB protection](/articles/auto-insurance/car-insurance-add-ons-explained).
- It belongs to you, not the car, so it transfers when you buy a new car.
- It transfers between insurers, so switching does not cost you the bonus if you renew on time.
- Let the policy lapse beyond the grace window and the NCB is usually lost.

## What to review at every renewal

1. **IDV.** It drops as the car ages. Confirm it still reflects fair value; see [IDV explained](/articles/auto-insurance/idv-car-insurance-explained).
2. **Add-ons.** Drop riders you no longer need and add ones that now make sense; see [add-ons explained](/articles/auto-insurance/car-insurance-add-ons-explained).
3. **Quotes.** Compare across insurers rather than auto-renewing. Loyalty rarely earns the best price.
4. **Cover type.** As the car ages, re-check whether comprehensive still makes sense versus [third-party](/articles/auto-insurance/third-party-vs-comprehensive-car-insurance-india).
5. **Cashless garages.** Make sure convenient workshops are still in-network.

## Should you claim or pay small repairs yourself?

For minor damage, weigh the repair cost against the NCB you would lose by claiming. Sometimes paying a small bill yourself keeps a valuable bonus intact.

## Switching insurers at renewal

You can switch insurers and carry your NCB across, as long as you renew on time. Compare options on the [all car insurance companies](/auto-insurance/insurers) page and shortlist from the [best car insurance companies](/articles/auto-insurance/best-car-insurance-companies-india).
