## Why EV insurance is different

An electric vehicle is not just a petrol car with a different engine. Its most expensive parts (the battery, the electric motor, and the charging equipment) fail and get damaged in different ways, and they cost far more to replace. That changes what your policy needs to protect and how you should compare quotes.

## What to check specifically for an EV

- **Battery cover.** The battery is the single most expensive component. Confirm how the policy treats battery damage, water ingress, and short circuits, and whether depreciation applies.
- **Charger and cable.** Home and portable chargers can be damaged or stolen. Check whether they are covered and whether it is at home as well as in the car.
- **Motor protection.** The electric motor is costly; make sure damage to it, especially from water, is covered.
- **Towing and roadside support.** A stranded EV needs specialist towing that will not damage the drivetrain. Good roadside assistance matters more here.
- **Specialist repair network.** EV repairs need trained workshops. Confirm the insurer has cashless garages that actually service your EV in your city.

## Add-ons worth prioritising for EVs

- **Zero depreciation** so you are not paying a big share of expensive part replacements.
- **Engine (motor) and battery protection**, especially in flood-prone areas.
- **Return to invoice** on a new EV, where the gap between invoice and [IDV](/articles/auto-insurance/idv-car-insurance-explained) can be large.
- **Roadside assistance** tuned for EVs.

See the full [add-ons guide](/articles/auto-insurance/car-insurance-add-ons-explained) for how each works.

## How to compare EV quotes

1. Compare like for like on IDV and battery treatment, not just headline premium.
2. Confirm the cashless garage list can service your specific EV.
3. Prioritise the add-ons above rather than the cheapest bare policy.
4. Re-check cover and IDV at each [renewal](/articles/auto-insurance/car-insurance-renewal-guide) as battery value changes.
