## What IDV is

Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the current market value of your car as set in the policy. It is the maximum amount the insurer will pay if your car is stolen or damaged beyond repair (a total loss). It is not what you paid for the car; it is the depreciated value today.

## How IDV is calculated

IDV starts from the manufacturer's listed price and reduces with age through a depreciation schedule. A newer car has a higher IDV; an older car has a lower one. Accessories not fitted at the factory may be valued separately.

## Why IDV matters so much

- **It sets your maximum claim.** On theft or total loss, you cannot get more than the IDV. A too-low IDV leaves you short exactly when the loss is biggest.
- **It drives your premium.** A higher IDV means a higher own-damage premium; a lower IDV means a cheaper premium.

This is the trap behind some cheap quotes: the premium looks low because the IDV was quietly reduced. You save a little now and lose a lot on a total-loss claim.

## How to set IDV correctly

1. Aim for an IDV close to the fair market value of your car. Do not slash it just to lower the premium.
2. When comparing quotes, line up IDV side by side. A quote is only cheaper if the IDV is the same.
3. If you want fuller protection on a newer car, pair a fair IDV with the [return to invoice add-on](/articles/auto-insurance/car-insurance-add-ons-explained).
4. Review IDV at each [renewal](/articles/auto-insurance/car-insurance-renewal-guide), since it falls as the car ages.

## Common mistakes

- Choosing the lowest premium without checking the IDV behind it.
- Setting IDV too high, which only raises the premium without increasing a genuine claim.
- Forgetting that IDV keeps dropping, so an old expectation of payout may no longer hold.
