Start with the full [car insurance guide](/auto-insurance) if you are comparing insurers, IDV, add-ons, and renewals together.

Third-party car insurance is the legal minimum in India. It covers liability for injury, death, or property damage caused to someone else. It does not repair your own car after an accident.

Comprehensive car insurance includes third-party liability and own-damage cover. That means the policy can cover insured damage to your car from accidents, theft, fire, flood, cyclone, riots, and similar events, subject to policy wording.

For a new car, financed car, expensive car, or daily-use car, comprehensive cover is usually the safer default. For a very old low-value car, third-party-only cover can be enough if you can comfortably pay your own repair bills.

Before buying, compare [car insurance companies](/auto-insurance/insurers), check IDV, and add zero depreciation only when the car age and premium make sense.
