Outside banks, Bajaj Finance raised its FD rates by 15-40 bps from 7 October, taking the 31-60 month rate to 7.75% from 7.40%. Bajaj Finance is an NBFC, so its deposits are not DICGC-insured.

## How safe is your FD? The INR 5 lakh DICGC rule

The Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) insures bank deposits up to INR 5,00,000 per depositor per bank. Three details matter:

- **Principal and interest count together.** A INR 4.8 lakh FD that grows past INR 5 lakh is only insured up to INR 5 lakh.
- **Each bank is separate.** Deposits in different banks are insured separately. Branches of the same bank are added together.
- **Same name, same capacity.** Cover is per depositor in the same right and capacity, so an account in your sole name and a joint account can be treated separately.

If you are placing more than INR 5 lakh, spreading it across two or three banks keeps every rupee insured.

## Should you lock in now? Build an FD ladder

RBI changed its stance to "calibrated tightening" and said cuts are off the table in the near term. Its next meeting is on 2 to 4 December 2026. Nobody can say if rates will rise again, so an FD ladder is a sensible way to avoid guessing:

1. Split your FD money into three to five parts.
2. Book each part for a different tenure, such as one, two and three years.
3. As each FD matures, reinvest it at the longest tenure in your ladder, at whatever rates are then on offer.

You always have money maturing soon, and you never lock everything in at one rate.

## FDs vs small savings for retirees

The Senior Citizens Savings Scheme pays 8.2% for October to December 2026, which is competitive with the best small finance bank rates and is backed by the government.
