FD rates in India have started to move up after RBI's October rate hike. This page answers one question: **should you lock your money in now, or wait for higher rates?** It shows what has changed, three ways to invest the same INR 5 lakh, and who each one suits. For the full senior citizen rate list, see [best FD rates for senior citizens](/articles/banking/best-fd-rates-senior-citizens). Background: [banking guides](/banking).

**Last updated: 31 October 2026.** Educational, not advice. Rates change often; confirm on the bank's site before you book.

- **RBI hiked** the repo rate to **5.50%** on 7 Oct 2026. Next decision: **4 Dec 2026**.
- **ICICI Bank** and **Indian Bank** raised some FD rates from **23 Oct**. **SBI** has not changed FD rates yet.
- **Lock in** if you want certainty. **Ladder** if you can't decide. **Waiting** in short FDs only pays if rates rise meaningfully.

## What has changed

| Date (2026) | What happened |
|---|---|
| 7 Oct | RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and called its stance "calibrated tightening" |
| 15 Oct | SBI raised its lending benchmarks (EBLR and MCLR). Its FD rates stayed at 3.05%-6.60% (general) and 3.55%-7.10% (seniors) |
| 23 Oct | ICICI Bank raised rates on 2-10 year FDs by 0.10 point; Indian Bank raised its 555-day and 777-day special FDs by 0.15 point |
| 4 Dec | RBI's next policy decision (meeting 2-4 Dec) |

A repo hike makes borrowing costlier for banks, and banks often follow by raising deposit rates, but slowly and not all at the same time. Related: [what the repo hike means for your home loan EMI](/articles/loans/repo-rate-hike-home-loan-emi).

## The new rates (deposits below INR 3 crore)

| Bank and tenure | General | Senior citizens | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian Bank, 555 days (Ind Grow) | 6.80% | 7.30% | +0.15 |
| Indian Bank, 777 days (Ind Prosper) | 6.75% | 7.25% | +0.15 |
| ICICI Bank, 1 year to under 18 months | 6.25% | 6.75% | unchanged |
| ICICI Bank, 18 months to 2 years | 6.30% | 6.80% | unchanged |
| ICICI Bank, 2 years 1 day to 3 years | 6.55% | 7.05% | +0.10 |
| ICICI Bank, 3 years 1 day to 5 years | 6.60% | 7.20% | +0.10 |
| ICICI Bank, 5 years 1 day to 10 years | 6.60% | 7.10% | +0.10 |
| ICICI Bank, 5-year tax saver | 6.60% | 7.20% | +0.10 |

## Lock in, wait, or ladder?

Three ways to invest INR 5 lakh using ICICI Bank's general rates above:

| Option | What you do | Year-1 interest (approx.) | Good if rates... | Bad if rates... |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Lock in** | All INR 5 lakh in a 5-year FD at 6.60% | INR 33,000 | fall or stay flat | rise a lot (you're stuck at 6.60%) |
| **Wait short** | All INR 5 lakh in a 1-year FD at 6.25%, decide next year | INR 31,250 | rise sharply | fall (you reinvest lower) |
| **Ladder** | INR 1 lakh each in 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5-year FDs | INR 32,300 | do anything (you're partly covered both ways) | -- you never get the single best outcome |

<div data-viz="bars" data-id="fd-lockin-vs-ladder-icici"></div>

<div data-callout="note" data-title="How the ladder maths works">

INR 1 lakh each at 6.25% (1 year), 6.30% (2 years), 6.55% (3 years), 6.60% (4 years) and 6.60% (5 years) gives INR 6,250 + INR 6,300 + INR 6,550 + INR 6,600 + INR 6,600 = **INR 32,300** in the first year. These are simple-interest figures before tax; actual returns are slightly higher with quarterly compounding on cumulative FDs. Seniors earn roughly 0.50 point more on each rung.

</div>

The gap between the options is small: about **INR 1,750 a year** on INR 5 lakh between "all 1-year" and "all 5-year". That is why the decision is more about **when you need the money** and **how you'd feel if rates moved** than about squeezing out the last rupee.

### When each option makes sense

| You are... | Consider |
|---|---|
| A retiree who needs predictable monthly income | Lock in a large part for 3-5 years, or use a ladder so some money matures every year |
| Saving for something in 1-2 years | Match the FD to the date; don't lock past when you need the money |
| Unsure and want to keep options open | Ladder |
| Expecting more hikes and fine with being wrong | Short FDs now, longer ones later, but there's no guarantee rates rise |

## Things to check before you book

- **Premature withdrawal penalty.** Breaking an FD early usually costs a penalty on the rate. Check the bank's rule before choosing "lock in, break later if rates rise".
- **Special tenures.** Indian Bank's best rates are on exact 555-day and 777-day deposits; a slightly different tenure can pay much less.
- **Deposit insurance.** DICGC insures up to INR 5 lakh per depositor per bank, including interest. Spread larger sums across banks.
- **Tax.** FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, and banks deduct TDS above a threshold. Senior citizens can submit Form 15H if their total income is below the taxable limit.
- **Small finance banks** often pay more than the banks above, with higher risk; see our [senior citizen FD comparison](/articles/banking/best-fd-rates-senior-citizens).
