Anchor your framework with the [credit cards pillar](/credit-cards) first. This is the page to read before chasing rewards, because fees and interest can erase every reward many times over.

## The minimum-due trap

Your statement shows a "minimum amount due," often a small fraction of the total. Paying only that keeps your account current, but it is a trap: the moment you do not pay in full, interest starts accruing on the entire outstanding balance, and new purchases usually stop getting an interest-free period too.

Because credit card interest is among the most expensive consumer credit around, a balance carried for several cycles can cost far more than any cashback or reward you earned. The single most valuable habit in using a credit card is paying the full statement balance every month.

## The fees to watch

- **Annual fee.** Recurring charge for holding the card. Only worth it if your rewards clearly exceed it, or a waiver milestone is realistic.
- **Finance charges (interest).** Applied when you do not pay in full. The core cost of the minimum-due trap.
- **Late payment fee.** Charged for missing the due date, on top of interest and a possible hit to your credit score.
- **Cash advance fee.** Withdrawing cash on a credit card usually attracts a fee plus interest from day one, with no interest-free period.
- **Overlimit fee.** Charged if you spend beyond your limit where allowed.
- **Forex markup.** A percentage added on international and some foreign-currency online transactions.
- **Fuel and rent surcharges.** Certain categories carry surcharges that can offset rewards.

## How to avoid almost all of them

1. **Pay in full, every month.** This alone removes interest, the biggest cost.
2. **Automate the payment** for at least the full statement balance so you never miss a due date.
3. **Never use cash advances** unless it is a genuine emergency.
4. **Track your annual fee** against actual rewards; downgrade or cancel a card that does not pay for itself.
5. **Watch category surcharges** on fuel, rent, and wallet loads.

## The bigger picture

A credit card is a tool, not free money. Used well, it gives rewards and a short interest-free loan; used poorly, it is expensive debt.
