## The rates are identical; the caps are not

Each brand has its own INR 4,000 quarterly cap on both cards:

- **Flipkart at 5%:** cap reached at INR 80,000 a quarter
- **Myntra at 7.5%:** cap reached at about INR 53,333 a quarter
- **Cleartrip at 5%:** cap reached at INR 80,000 a quarter

The real gap is the 4% tier. Axis pays 4% at its preferred merchants with no cap, and its terms name Swiggy food delivery as one. SBI caps its 4% "select merchants" at INR 4,000 a quarter, or INR 1 lakh of spend. Under INR 1 lakh a quarter at these merchants, the cards pay the same.

Quarters also start at different times. Axis follows your statement date, so if statements land on the 15th, quarters run 16 March to 15 June and so on. SBI counts from your first transaction through the next three billing cycles, then resets.

## What earns nothing

Axis's cashback terms exclude utilities and telecom, fuel, jewellery and gold, insurance, financial institutions, rent, wallet loads, education, government services, EMI purchases and Flipkart or Myntra gift cards. From 28 August 2026 Axis also pays nothing on tolls, bridge and road fees, and classes gift cards separately. SBI's terms exclude fuel, cash advances, balance transfers and similar charges, and its card follows SBI Card's standard category rules.

## Fees you might hit

- **Axis:** 1% on utility spends over INR 25,000 a cycle, wallet loads over INR 10,000, fuel over INR 50,000, rent and third-party education payments. Since 28 August 2026, rupee transactions with foreign-registered merchants carry a 3.5% markup.
- **SBI:** from 1 December, a 1% fee on large fuel and transport spends; see [SBI Card's 1% fee on fuel and transport](/articles/credit-cards/sbi-card-1-percent-fee-fuel-transport-december-2026).

## The maths

Say each quarter you spend INR 30,000 on Flipkart, INR 9,000 on Myntra, INR 15,000 at 4% partners and INR 40,000 elsewhere, INR 3.76 lakh a year:

- Flipkart: INR 1,500; Myntra: INR 675; partners: INR 600; other: INR 400
- Quarter: INR 3,175. Year: **INR 12,700** on either card
- Fee: waived on both, since you passed INR 3.5 lakh

Push partner spend to INR 1.5 lakh a quarter and Axis pays INR 6,000 there while SBI stops at INR 4,000.

## Which one to pick

- **Pick Axis** if you spend a lot at the preferred partners, or want caps that line up with your statements.
- **Pick SBI** if you already bank with SBI Card, or book on Cleartrip often enough to use its coupon discounts.
- **Pick neither** if you can't reach INR 3.5 lakh a year and mostly shop on Amazon; see [Amazon Pay ICICI](/articles/credit-cards/amazon-pay-icici-credit-card-review). For broad online spend, see [SBI Cashback](/articles/credit-cards/sbi-cashback-card-review).
