Anchor your framework with the [credit cards pillar](/credit-cards) first. Choose cards by real spending pattern, not influencer hype, then shortlist from the [best credit cards by use-case](/articles/credit-cards/best-credit-cards-india).

## Start with your spending, not the card

Most people pick a card for its headline reward rate and then try to spend into it. Reverse that. Map where your money actually goes, and the right card usually picks itself.

## Step 1: Map your monthly spend

List your typical monthly spend by category, for example:

- Online shopping
- Groceries and supermarkets
- Fuel
- Dining and food delivery
- Travel (flights, hotels)
- Utilities and bills

## Step 2: Weight your biggest categories

Rank the categories by how much you spend. The card that rewards your top two or three categories will beat a card with a flashy rate in a category you rarely use. This is the logic behind a card matcher: weight the spend, then map it to the best-fit card family.

## Step 3: Match spend to card type

| Your top spend | Card type to shortlist |
|---|---|
| Online shopping, everyday | [Cashback card](/articles/credit-cards/best-cashback-credit-cards-india) |
| Flights and hotels | [Travel card](/articles/credit-cards/best-travel-credit-cards-india) |
| Mixed, first card | Lifetime-free starter card |
| Very high overall spend | Premium rewards card |

A credit card matcher tool that maps your profile to a card family is on the way -- see [all our tools](/tools) for what is live today.

## Step 4: Run the fee math

Estimate your yearly rewards in the card's strong categories, then subtract the annual fee. If the net is worse than a lifetime-free card, the free card wins. Only count a fee waiver if your normal spend clears the milestone.

## Step 5: Sanity-check the fine print

- Caps and exclusions on rewarded categories.
- Whether rent, fuel, and wallet loads earn rewards.
- Redemption value, especially for points versus cashback.

## The rule that overrides everything

No reward beats the cost of revolving a balance. Pay in full every month; see [credit card fees and the minimum-due trap](/articles/credit-cards/credit-card-fees-and-minimum-due-trap). Then pick from the [best credit cards by use-case](/articles/credit-cards/best-credit-cards-india).
