Our [best travel credit cards](/articles/credit-cards/best-travel-credit-cards-india) guide covers general travel cards. This review looks at India's main hotel co-branded card, the **Marriott Bonvoy HDFC Bank credit card**, and at whether the yearly free night really covers the fee.

**Last updated: 31 October 2026.** Educational, not advice. HDFC changed when the welcome benefits are credited from 1 October 2026; check HDFC's latest terms before applying.

## The October 2026 change

For cards opened **until 30 September 2026**, the welcome Free Night Award, Elite Night Credits and Silver Elite were credited on the card fee being charged **or** a single INR 500 transaction within 90 days, whichever came first. For cards opened **from 1 October 2026**, HDFC says they are credited **only once the card fee is levied**. You still get the same benefits; they just arrive with your first fee charge.

HDFC is also running an enrolment-based anniversary offer from 1 October to 30 November 2026: 15,000 bonus points on INR 1.5 lakh of spend in that period, or 30,000 points on INR 2.5 lakh. Enrolment closes on 10 November 2026.

## Does the free night cover the fee?

The fee is INR 3,540 a year with GST. The Free Night Award covers one night at a hotel costing up to 15,000 points (HDFC's page says the Free Night Award includes room rate and taxes). Reviewers report that Marriott began letting members top up a certificate with up to 25,000 points in March 2026; HDFC's page still describes the 15,000-point limit.

So the card pays for itself **if you would otherwise pay more than about INR 3,540 for that night**. For many people who stay at a Marriott hotel even once a year, that is easy.

### The everyday earn rate

On regular spending the card earns 2 points per INR 150, about 1.3 points per INR 100. Marriott doesn't fix a rupee value for a point. Even at a generous INR 0.70 a point, that is under 1% back, less than a flat cashback card. Use this card for Marriott stays and the milestones, and another card for everything else.

### The milestone nights

To earn all three milestone nights you need INR 15 lakh of spend in an anniversary year. At INR 6 lakh you get one extra night. If you already spend that much on a card, compare against the [HDFC Regalia Gold](/credit-cards/hdfc-bank/regalia-gold) or [Axis Magnus](/credit-cards/axis-bank/magnus), which may earn more flexible rewards.

## Who should get it

- **People who stay at a Marriott hotel at least once a year.** The free night does most of the work.
- **Travellers who value Silver Elite and Elite Night Credits** towards higher Bonvoy status.

## Who should skip it

- **People who don't stay at Marriott hotels.** There is no fee waiver.
- **Anyone who needs one card that works everywhere.** Diners Club is accepted at fewer merchants than Visa or Mastercard; see [Amex acceptance in India](/articles/credit-cards/amex-acceptance-india) for a similar trade-off.
