Paytm and AU Small Finance Bank launched a **lifetime-free RuPay credit card** on **21 October 2026**. Because it is RuPay, you can link it to UPI and pay any shop QR with it. This review explains what you actually earn, **who it suits**, and **the catches** in the fine print. If you are choosing a first card, also read [best credit cards for beginners](/articles/credit-cards/best-credit-cards-for-beginners).

**Last updated: 31 October 2026.** Educational, not advice. We have not been paid by Paytm or AU Small Finance Bank. Check the bank's latest terms before you apply.

<div data-callout="tldr">

- **Free for life**, RuPay, works on UPI.
- **Best value:** small Paytm UPI payments (INR 100-INR 2,000), Paytm Travel and Paytm Gold.
- **Main catch:** "2%" and "5%" assume you redeem points as **Paytm Gold**. Elsewhere a point is worth **INR 0.50**.
- **Suits:** daily Paytm UPI users. **Skip if** you mostly use another UPI app or make large payments.

| Paytm UPI above INR 2,000 | 1 point per INR 100 |

## What you'd actually earn: worked example

<div data-callout="note" data-title="INR 15,000 a month of spends">

| Spend | Amount | Points | Value as Paytm Gold | Value otherwise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 Paytm UPI payments averaging INR 200 | INR 12,000 | 240 | INR 240 | INR 120 |
| One INR 3,000 Paytm UPI payment | INR 3,000 | 30 | INR 30 | INR 15 |
| **Total** | **INR 15,000** | **270** | **INR 270 (1.8%)** | **INR 135 (0.9%)** |

Points are calculated per INR 100 on each payment; rounding rules can lower the total slightly. If the same INR 12,000 went through another UPI app, it would earn only 30 points.

</div>

## Who it suits

- **Daily Paytm UPI users** who make lots of small payments: groceries, auto rides, tea, kirana.
- **People who already buy digital gold**, or don't mind holding rewards as Paytm Gold.
- **Families who book domestic flights on Paytm Travel** a few times a year and want lounge access for everyone.
- **First-time card users** who want a no-fee card and can stick to paying in full.

## Who should skip it

- You use **Google Pay or PhonePe** for most UPI payments: other apps earn 1 point per INR 400, roughly 0.25% or less.
- Your typical payments are **above INR 2,000**: the rate halves.
- You want **plain cashback** to your statement, not gold or points.
- You spend a lot abroad: reports and the card's terms list a forex markup of **up to 3.5%** plus taxes. A [zero-forex card](/articles/credit-cards/best-zero-forex-credit-cards-india) is better for that.

## The catches

<div data-card="risk" data-title="The headline rates assume Paytm Gold">

The "up to 2%" and "5%" figures need points redeemed as Paytm Gold at INR 1 each. Redeem for anything else and each point is worth INR 0.50, which halves your return. AU Small Finance Bank has also charged a reward redemption fee of INR 99 plus GST per request on its cards; check whether it applies to Paytm Gold redemptions before you redeem small amounts.

</div>

<div data-card="risk" data-title="Caps and exclusions (from third-party reviews)">

Card comparison sites report a cap of 3,000 reward points per statement cycle and no rewards on wallet loads, rent, education, government payments, fuel, insurance, transport, and utilities paid outside the Paytm app. We could not confirm the full list on AU's own page; check the card's MITC.

</div>

<div data-card="risk" data-title="UPI credit is still credit">

Paying a shop QR with a credit card feels like spending from your bank account, but it adds to a bill. Late payment costs up to INR 1,300 per the card's charges, and interest on unpaid balances is high. Cash withdrawals cost 2.5% (minimum INR 500).

</div>

- **Lounge access is tied to Paytm Travel bookings** of round-trip flights worth at least INR 5,000. No booking, no lounge.
- **Fuel surcharge waiver cap:** AU's card page and the MITC appear to show different monthly caps. Treat it as small either way.

## How it compares with other free starter cards

| | Paytm AU RuPay | IDFC FIRST Millennia |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | Lifetime free | Lifetime free |
| Works on UPI | Yes (RuPay) | Only RuPay credit cards link to UPI; check the network of the card you're offered |
| Best for | Paytm UPI, Paytm Travel, Paytm Gold | Simple rewards; 0% forex on most IDFC FIRST cards |
| Main catch | Value depends on staying inside Paytm | Rewards are modest |

## Our take

If Paytm is already your UPI app, this is a **reasonable free second card or starter card** for small everyday payments and Paytm Travel bookings. Its value falls quickly outside Paytm, so don't make it your only card if you shop widely or travel abroad. Whatever you pick, pay the full bill every month.
