Your EPF is often the biggest retirement asset you have, so read this alongside the [FIRE guide](/fire). This page explains the **EPF partial withdrawal rules for 2026**, from the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation's (EPFO) new guide, and what each withdrawal costs your retirement.

## What EPFO announced on 13 October 2026

EPFO published a "Smart Guide on New Rules on EPF Advances" on 13 October 2026. Business Today and Mint reported its main points the next day. Advances are partial withdrawals that you do not repay.

## EPF partial withdrawal rules 2026 at a glance

| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Who qualifies | Members with at least 12 months of membership |
| Maximum amount | Up to 75% of your balance: employee share, employer share and interest |
| Illness (medical) | No limit on the number of advances |
| Education | Up to 10 advances |
| Marriage | Up to 5 advances |
| Housing | Up to 5 advances; covers purchase, construction, home loan repayment and renovation |
| Special circumstances | Up to 2 advances per financial year |

Because the cap is 75%, at least a quarter of your balance stays invested. The counts apply across your membership, so a housing advance used early in your career is one you cannot use later.

## What each withdrawal costs your retirement

EPF credited 8.25% for 2025-26. If that rate held, here is what a withdrawal would have grown to by age 58:

| Withdrawn | At age | Years to 58 | Value at 58 at 8.25% |
|---|---|---|---|
| INR 2 lakh | 35 | 23 | about INR 12.4 lakh |
| INR 5 lakh | 38 | 20 | about INR 24.4 lakh |
| INR 5 lakh | 30 | 28 | about INR 46.0 lakh |

The EPF rate is declared every year and can change, so treat these as illustrations. To see the effect on your own balance, run your numbers through the [EPF calculator](/tools/epf-calculator).

## When an EPF advance makes sense

- **Medical emergencies** with no health cover or an exhausted sum insured. This is what the unlimited medical advance is for, but good [health insurance cover](/articles/health-insurance/how-much-health-insurance-cover) means you should rarely need it.
- **Avoiding expensive debt.** Using EPF instead of a personal loan or credit card debt can make sense, because those rates are well above 8.25%.
- **A home down payment,** if the alternative is a much larger loan. Compare the loan rate with the EPF rate after the [repo rate hike](/articles/loans/repo-rate-hike-home-loan-emi).

## When to leave it alone

Weddings, cars and holidays are better funded from savings set aside for them. Each rupee you take from EPF in your thirties is several rupees less at retirement, and it may push back your FIRE date. Our guide on [how to calculate your FIRE number](/articles/fire/how-to-calculate-your-fire-number-india) shows how much the corpus needs to be.
