Gold has had a sharp fall just before the festive season. This page answers one question: **if you were planning to buy gold this Dhanteras, should you buy now, wait, or spread it out?** It shows what has happened to prices, the main ways to buy, a simple averaging-in example, and the risks. For where gold fits in a long-term plan, see our [FIRE guides](/fire).

**Last updated: 1 November 2026.** Educational, not advice. Gold prices change every day; check the current rate before you buy.

<div data-callout="tldr" data-title="The short version">

- Delhi gold (99.9% purity) is **INR 1,42,000 per 10 g**, down INR 3,200 on 31 October 2026 and the lowest since 26 December 2025.
- That is about **22% below** the record of INR 1,83,000 on 29 January 2026, and about **7% above** last Dhanteras (INR 1,32,400 on 18 October 2025).
- Dhanteras is on **Friday 6 November**; Diwali is on **Sunday 8 November 2026**.
- Not sure about timing? **Buying in instalments** spreads the risk. Gold ETFs and gold funds avoid making charges.
- **Digital gold is not regulated by SEBI.** No new sovereign gold bonds have been issued since February 2024.

## What has happened to gold prices

| Date | Delhi gold, 99.9%, per 10 g | What happened |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 18 Oct 2025 (Dhanteras) | INR 1,32,400 | Fell INR 2,400 from the previous day's then-record of INR 1,34,800 |
| 26 Dec 2025 | INR 1,42,300 | Last time prices were this low |
| 29 Jan 2026 | INR 1,83,000 | All-time high, up INR 12,000 in a day |
| 30 Oct 2026 | INR 1,45,200 | Close before the latest fall |
| 31 Oct 2026 | INR 1,42,000 | Down INR 3,200, a 10-month low; silver down INR 4,200 to INR 1,86,000 per kg |

Prices are from the All India Sarafa Association, including taxes, as reported by PTI. Global spot gold fell nearly 4% on the day to about $3,875.55 an ounce, its lowest in more than a year.

<div data-viz="bars" data-id="gold-delhi-price-path"></div>

### Why it fell

PTI's 31 October report quoted analysts at 360 ONE Asset and Motilal Oswal Financial Services. They pointed to three things:

- worries that higher energy prices will keep inflation high;
- hawkish comments from US Federal Reserve officials, with markets betting on a rate hike in December;
- selling across global markets.

None of these tells you what happens next. In the past 13 months gold has both set records and fallen sharply.

## Ways to buy gold, compared

| Option | Costs to know about | Good for | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Jewellery** | 3% GST plus making charges, which vary by jeweller and design | Wearing it; festival and wedding buying | Making charges are usually not recovered when you sell. Ask for an itemised bill and a BIS hallmark. |
| **Coins and bars** | 3% GST and the seller's premium | Holding physical gold without making charges | Storage, purity and resale price. Buy hallmarked products from known sellers. |
| **Gold ETF** | Expense ratio, brokerage and the bid-ask spread | Low-cost investing if you have a demat account | Needs a demat and trading account. Trades at market prices during the day. |
| **Gold fund of funds** | The fund's expenses plus the underlying ETF's expenses | SIPs without a demat account | Two layers of cost. Buys and sells at the end-of-day NAV. |
| **Digital gold (apps)** | Spreads and charges set by the provider | Very small amounts | Outside SEBI regulation, so no SEBI investor protection (see below). |
| **Sovereign gold bonds** | No new issues | Existing holders | No tranche since February 2024. Existing bonds can be redeemed early in RBI windows. |

GST on gold was left at 3% by the GST Council in September 2025 (CNBC-TV18). Gold ETFs hold physical gold of 99.5% purity and trade on the NSE and BSE; gold funds of funds invest in those ETFs (Mint, 26 September 2026).

<div data-callout="warn" data-title="Digital gold: what SEBI said">

On 8 November 2025 SEBI warned that digital or e-gold products sold on online platforms are **not securities or regulated commodity derivatives** and are **entirely outside its regulation**. They "may expose investors to significant risks", including counterparty and operational risk, and no SEBI investor-protection mechanism applies. SEBI's regulated alternatives are gold ETFs, electronic gold receipts and exchange-traded commodity derivatives.

### Sovereign gold bonds: where things stand

The government has not issued a new sovereign gold bond since the 2023-24 Series IV tranche in February 2024. In a Rajya Sabha reply in July 2025, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the government had issued 67 tranches totalling 146.96 tonnes (about INR 72,275 crore), and linked fresh issues to prudent debt management and the cost of borrowing (Business Today).

If you already hold bonds, RBI publishes premature redemption dates, which are allowed after five years. Its calendar of 21 August 2026 lists, for example:

- **2020-21 Series II:** redemption on 19 November 2026; requests between 19 October and 9 November.
- **2019-20 Series I:** redemption on 11 December 2026; requests between 9 November and 1 December.

Check the RBI calendar for your series before you decide.

## Buy now, wait, or average in?

| Approach | What you are betting on | Suits you if |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Buy all now** | That prices won't fall much further | You need the gold for Dhanteras or a wedding, or a planned allocation is overdue |
| **Wait** | That prices will fall further | You have no deadline and accept that prices may rise instead |
| **Average in** | Nothing; you accept the average price | You want gold but can't decide on timing |

<div data-callout="note" data-title="Worked example: INR 60,000 three ways (hypothetical)">

Suppose you want to put INR 60,000 into gold. Today's price works out to INR 14,200 a gram (INR 1,42,000 per 10 g). The prices for months 2 and 3 below are **made up** to show how averaging works. They are not a forecast.

- **Lump sum today:** INR 60,000 / INR 14,200 = **4.23 g**.
- **Average in (INR 20,000 a month) and prices fall** to INR 13,500 and then INR 12,800: you get 1.41 + 1.48 + 1.56 = **4.45 g**, at an average of about INR 13,476 a gram.
- **Average in and prices rise** to INR 14,900 and then INR 15,600: you get 1.41 + 1.34 + 1.28 = **4.03 g**, at an average of about INR 14,878 a gram.

At the end of month 3, in the falling case, the averaged pile is worth about INR 56,990 against INR 54,080 for the lump sum. In the rising case it is worth about INR 62,920 against INR 65,920. Averaging gives up some upside in exchange for less regret if prices keep falling. The example ignores GST, making charges and fund costs.

<div data-viz="bars" data-id="gold-average-in-grams"></div>

For a monthly plan without a demat account, a gold fund of funds SIP does this automatically. With a demat account, you can buy a gold ETF on a fixed date each month.

## Risks to weigh

<div data-grid="cards" data-cols="3">

<div data-card="risk" data-icon="bolt" data-title="Prices can keep falling">

Gold has dropped about 22% from its January record. Nothing stops a further fall, and a 10-month low is not a floor.

</div>

<div data-card="risk" data-icon="coin" data-title="Making charges eat returns">

On jewellery you pay making charges and 3% GST up front, and the making charges are usually lost when you sell. Ask for an itemised bill.

</div>

<div data-card="risk" data-icon="shield" data-title="Unregulated digital gold">

SEBI says digital gold sits outside its regulation. If the platform or its vault partner fails, you have no SEBI route to recover your money.

</div>

<div data-card="risk" data-icon="scale" data-title="Too much in one asset">

Gold pays no interest or dividend. Many planners treat it as a small diversifier, not the core of a retirement corpus.

</div>

<div data-card="risk" data-icon="book" data-title="Purity and paperwork">

Buy hallmarked gold and keep the bill. It makes resale and any tax calculation simpler.

</div>

<div data-card="risk" data-icon="debt" data-title="Festival rush">

Avoid buying on credit or EMIs just to hit an auspicious date. Dhanteras comes back every year.

</div>

</div>

## Things to check before you buy

- **Today's rate** from your jeweller or the exchange price, not a week-old headline.
- **BIS hallmark** and an itemised bill showing gold value, making charges and GST separately.
- **Expense ratio and tracking** if you choose an ETF or fund of funds.
- **Your allocation**: how much of your portfolio gold already makes up, including jewellery at home.
