Bima Sugam affects every policy type in our [health insurance](/health-insurance) and [term life insurance](/term-life-insurance) guides. This page explains **Bima Sugam and its launch date**: what IRDAI has confirmed, what is still unknown, and what it changes for you.

## What is Bima Sugam?

Bima Sugam is a common digital platform for insurance, first proposed by IRDAI in 2022. The idea is that you can see policies from different insurers side by side, buy one, renew it, update it and file claims, all in one place. IRDAI's chairman has compared it to UPI: one shared system that many companies plug into, run on a not-for-profit basis with nominal fees.

It is owned by the Bima Sugam India Federation. According to IRDAI's September 2026 consultation paper, every insurer except three is a shareholder.

## Bima Sugam launch date: what we know

On 27 September 2026, Insurance Reporter quoted IRDAI chairman Ajay Seth confirming that Bima Sugam will go live by November 2026. The first products will be:

- motor insurance
- health insurance
- term life insurance

No exact date, list of participating insurers or fee schedule had been published by 18 October 2026. We will update this page when the platform launches.

## The Public Insurance Registry behind it

Bima Sugam sits on a data layer called the Public Insurance Registry, which is being rolled out in phases. In a BusinessLine interview published on 11 October 2026, Seth said the registry will also show how often and by how much insurers revise premiums. In IRDAI's September 2026 consultation paper, Bima Sugam is described as a market infrastructure institution, alongside proposals to cap commissions. See our explainer on the [IRDAI commission cap proposal](/articles/health-insurance/irdai-commission-cap-consultation-paper).

## What changes for you

### Comparing policies

You should be able to compare products from many insurers in one place, without a broker or agent steering you. It will still be up to you to compare the details that matter: room-rent limits, co-pay, waiting periods and claim records. Our guide on [how to buy health insurance in India](/articles/health-insurance/how-to-buy-health-insurance-india) explains what to check.

### Claims and servicing

The promise is a single place to track policies and claims. How this will work in practice has not been detailed. Until it is, file claims with your insurer or TPA as usual.

### Claim records

If the registry publishes insurer-level claims data, it will be easier to see how much insurers actually pay, not just how many claims they settle. Read why that matters in our [claim settlement ratio guide](/articles/health-insurance/top-claim-settlement-ratio-companies).

## What is still unknown

- The exact launch date and which insurers join on day one.
- What fees, if any, buyers pay.
- Whether agents and brokers can sell through it, and on what terms.
- When other products, such as life savings plans, are added.
