Use this checklist alongside the full [health insurance in India](/health-insurance) guide. Once you have cleared these checks, shortlist from the [best health insurance plans](/articles/health-insurance/best-health-insurance-plans-india).

## Why a checklist beats brand loyalty

The real value of a health policy lives in its wording, not its brand. Room rent, waiting periods, network hospitals, co-pay, consumables, and treatment sub-limits decide what you actually get paid. Run every plan through these 12 checks before you pay.

## The 12 checks

1. **Sum insured fits your city.** A cover that handles one major hospitalisation in your city tier is the practical baseline. Metro treatment costs more, so do not under-insure.
2. **No room-rent cap.** Room-rent limits trigger proportionate deductions across the whole bill. Prefer plans with no capping or category limits.
3. **Pre-existing disease waiting period.** Check how many years until your existing conditions are covered, and whether an add-on can reduce it.
4. **Specific-illness and initial waiting periods.** Some illnesses and the first 30 days carry their own waiting periods. Match these against your health history.
5. **Network hospitals near you.** Confirm your preferred hospitals are on the cashless list in your city. A great plan with no nearby network hospital is weak for you.
6. **Co-payment clauses.** Co-pay means you share every claim. It is common on senior-citizen plans and makes costs less predictable.
7. **Consumables and non-medical items.** These add up in real bills. Check whether they are covered or excluded.
8. **Restoration benefit.** Restoration refills your sum insured if it runs out during the year. Read whether it applies to the same illness or only a new one.
9. **No-claim bonus rules.** Understand how your cover grows in claim-free years and whether a claim resets it.
10. **Sub-limits on treatments.** Caps on specific procedures (for example cataract or knee replacement) can leave a large gap. Note them before buying.
11. **Claim process and turnaround.** Know the cashless and reimbursement workflow and typical approval time. Slower service matters when you are in hospital.
12. **Premium versus what it buys.** Compare the premium against the actual cover and restrictions. The cheapest plan often hides a low sum insured or a room-rent cap.

## After the checklist

Once a plan clears all 12, decide the structure: a [family floater vs an individual policy](/articles/health-insurance/family-floater-vs-individual-policy-india) changes the math for young families versus older parents. Compare shortlisted insurers on the [all health insurance companies](/health-insurance/insurers) page.

Remember employer cover can disappear when you change jobs, retire, or need to cover parents, so buy personal cover while underwriting is still easy. When you structure annual payments, align them with your [tax planning](/tax-planning) to use the Section 80D deduction.
