If you live abroad, an Indian health policy can still be useful, but mainly for treatment **in India**. This guide covers what the wordings actually say. For the basics, see [what health insurance is](/articles/health-insurance/what-is-health-insurance).

## Where Indian plans pay

- **Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0** and **Niva Bupa Senior First** cover allopathic and AYUSH treatment taken in India only.
- **HDFC ERGO my: Optima Secure** has India-only variants. The same wording also lists separate "Secure Global" and "Global Plus" variants with their own conditions.
- **ICICI Lombard Elevate** sells a Worldwide Cover add-on up to Rs 3 crore. Its wording limits the add-on to people aged up to 65 who are **residents of India** and within India when the policy is issued. That rules out most NRIs. The same wording lists an "NRI Advantage - Cover for NRI" optional cover that needs no extra premium. We have not verified its full terms, so ask ICICI Lombard what it covers.

So an Indian plan suits you if you plan to come home for treatment, or if you are insuring family who live here.

## Insuring parents in India

The most common NRI case is cover for parents. Buy a policy in their names, at their Indian address, so claims and network hospitals line up with where they live. Senior plans vary widely on co-pay and room rent. Compare them in our [best health insurance for parents](/articles/health-insurance/best-health-insurance-for-parents) and [best senior citizen plans](/articles/health-insurance/best-health-insurance-senior-citizens) lists.

## GST on NRI policies

From 22 September 2025, individual health insurance is nil-rated under CBIC Notification 16/2025-Central Tax (Rate). The Department of Financial Services FAQ adds that an individual policy issued to an NRI can be treated as an export (zero-rated) if it meets the export-of-services conditions; otherwise it is exempt. Either way, no GST is charged on the premium. More in our [GST on health insurance](/articles/health-insurance/gst-on-health-insurance) guide.

## Checks before you buy

1. Will you be in India when the policy is issued, and does the insurer accept proposals from NRIs?
2. Where will treatment happen? If abroad, you need local cover there.
3. Are the [waiting periods](/articles/health-insurance/health-insurance-waiting-periods) acceptable if you will claim mainly on visits home?
4. Can you file [reimbursement claims](/articles/health-insurance/cashless-vs-reimbursement) from abroad, and who will handle the paperwork in India?
