Health insurance is mainly hospital insurance. If you want a policy that also helps with everyday doctor visits, you need OPD cover. Start with [what health insurance is](/articles/health-insurance/what-is-health-insurance) if you are new to the basics.

## What OPD means

IRDAI's standard definition, repeated in wordings such as Niva Bupa Senior First, describes OPD treatment as a visit to a clinic or hospital for diagnosis and treatment on a doctor's advice, **without** being admitted as an in-patient or day care patient. Consultations, routine tests, pharmacy bills and physiotherapy all fall here.

## Why base plans leave it out

Base plans pay for hospitalisation, [day care treatment](/glossary/day-care-treatment) and the [pre- and post-hospitalisation](/glossary/pre-hospitalisation) days around an admission. A test you take without being admitted is OPD, and it is not covered unless the plan says so.

## How OPD cover is sold: two real examples

**ICICI Lombard Elevate: BeFit add-on.** The Elevate wording sells BeFit in seven plans (A to G). They range from 1 to 12 out-patient consultations a year, with diagnostics and pharmacy caps from Rs 500 to Rs 7,500 each. Higher plans add physiotherapy sessions and e-counselling. BeFit is cashless only, through the app and network providers, and has a 30-day waiting period. [ICICI Lombard Elevate plan details](/health-insurance/icici-lombard/elevate).

**Star Senior Citizens Red Carpet: built-in consultations.** Red Carpet pays out-patient consultations at network hospitals at Rs 200 per consultation. The yearly limit depends on sum insured, for example Rs 1,400 per person at Rs 10 lakh. These payments do not reduce the sum insured. ## Is it worth it?

- Add up what you actually spent on doctor visits, tests and medicines last year.
- Compare that with the add-on's yearly cap **and** its extra premium.
- OPD spending is regular and predictable, so insuring it rarely beats paying yourself. Spend the money on a higher sum insured, or a [super top-up](/articles/health-insurance/super-top-up-vs-top-up), instead.
- The exception: someone with a chronic condition who sees a doctor every month may get value from a generous OPD plan. Check it is cashless at clinics near you.

If you are weighing premium against tax savings, see the [Section 80D guide](/articles/health-insurance/section-80d-tax-benefit).
