# BSE Hits INR 500 Lakh Crore Market Cap

> On 5 Nov 2026 BSE-listed companies' total market cap first crossed INR 500 lakh crore (~INR 502L cr, ~$5.31T). Why the milestone landed while Sensex is still ~7.6% below its peak -- IPOs, breadth and Jio.

On **Thursday 5 November 2026**, the combined value of companies listed on the BSE crossed **INR 500 lakh crore** for the first time. [Economic Times](https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/bse-market-cap-crosses-rs-500-lakh-crore-driven-by-ipos-steady-recovery/articleshow/135589188.cms) (Ravindra Sonavane) put the print at about **INR 502 lakh crore (~$5.31 trillion)**. The odd part: the **Sensex was still about 7.6% below its peak**. This page explains what total market cap measures, how long each INR 100 lakh crore step took, and why IPOs (including [Jio Platforms](/articles/ipo/jio-ipo)) matter for the headline even when they are not in the Sensex. More market context this week: the [reverse-AI IT rally](/articles/ipo/indian-it-stocks-reverse-ai-trade) and the [November IPO round-up](/articles/ipo/upcoming-ipos-november-2026).

**Last updated: 6 November 2026 (Asia/Calcutta).** Figures below follow ET's 6 Nov report on the 5 Nov milestone unless noted.

- **Milestone:** ~**INR 502 lakh crore** (~$5.31T) on **5 Nov 2026** -- first cross of INR 500L cr (ET).
- **Speed:** **622 sessions** from INR 400L cr (8 Apr 2024).
- **Indices still below peaks:** Sensex **−7.6%** vs 85,836 (26 Sep 2024); mid/small/micro also below highs.
- **IPO fuel:** 2026 YTD **107** mainboard listings added **>INR 25L cr** on listing day (ET).
- **Tape into the print:** Sensex/Nifty **+8.1%** in six sessions; crude **−19%** in three; FPI **>$3.4 bn** in 12 sessions.

## What "market cap" means in one minute

<div data-callout="jargon" data-title="Market capitalisation">

**One stock:** price x number of shares. **Whole exchange:** add that up for every listed company. When a new IPO lists, its entire market value is **added** to the exchange total on day one -- even if no older investor got richer. When prices fall, total mcap falls even if the list of companies is unchanged.

</div>

So a record **total mcap** can arrive from three mixes:

1. Existing stocks getting more expensive,
2. New companies listing,
3. Both at once (this week's story).

## The milestone ladder

<div data-viz="stats" data-id="bse-mcap-snapshot">

~INR 502L cr on 5 Nov 2026; 622 sessions from INR 400L; Sensex −7.6% vs peak; 2026 IPO listing-day adds >INR 25L cr; Sensex/Nifty +8.1% in six sessions; FPI >$3.4 bn in 12 sessions (ET).

</div>

Per ET:

| Milestone | First crossed | Sessions from previous |
| --- | --- | --- |
| INR 100 lakh crore | 12 Mar 2014 | -- |
| INR 200 lakh crore | 4 Feb 2021 | 1,494 |
| INR 300 lakh crore | 6 Jul 2023 | 586 |
| INR 400 lakh crore | 8 Apr 2024 | 181 |
| INR 500 lakh crore | 5 Nov 2026 (~INR 502L cr) | 622 |

<div data-viz="bars" data-id="bse-mcap-milestones">

BSE total mcap milestones: INR 100L (2014), INR 200L (2021), INR 300L (2023), INR 400L (2024), INR 500L (2026).

</div>

<div data-viz="timeline" data-id="bse-mcap-timeline">

12 Mar 2014 INR 100L -> 4 Feb 2021 INR 200L (1,494 sessions) -> 6 Jul 2023 INR 300L (586) -> 8 Apr 2024 INR 400L (181) -> 5 Nov 2026 INR 500L (622).

</div>

The step from INR 300L to INR 400L was the fastest (181 sessions). The step to INR 500L took longer (622) -- it ran through the 2024-26 drawdowns and recoveries.

## Why total mcap can peak while Sensex does not

ET's snapshot of distance from highs on the milestone day:

| Index | Distance below peak | Peak date (ET) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Sensex | −7.6% | 85,836 on 26 Sep 2024 |
| BSE MidCap 150 | −5.3% | 17,373 on 26 Aug 2026 |
| BSE SmallCap 250 | −8.4% | 7,514 on 23 Sep 2024 |
| BSE MicroCap 250 | −7% | 19,988 on 8 Sep 2026 |

Two structural reasons the **sum** can still print a record:

1. **Breadth.** Stocks outside the Sensex 30 can rally (or fall less) and still lift total mcap. Equirus Wealth's Ankur Punj, quoted by ET, made that point explicitly.
2. **New listings.** A company that was private last month adds its full market value when it lists. [Jio Platforms](/articles/ipo/jio-ipo) (listed 28 Oct 2026) and the NSE listing are the obvious mega examples in 2026 coverage; NDTV Profit separately noted that Jio and NSE alone accounted for most of the all-India mcap gain since the Nifty's early-2026 peak **without** being Nifty 50 members.

<div data-callout="warn" data-title="Index ≠ wealth of every investor">

Your portfolio is not the BSE total. A record exchange mcap can coincide with your holdings being down if you own the stocks that lagged.

</div>

## How much IPOs added on listing day

ET's mainboard listing-day mcap adds:

| Year | Mainboard debuts | Listing-day mcap added |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2024 | 94 | ~INR 12 lakh crore |
| 2025 | 115 | ~INR 14 lakh crore |
| 2026 YTD | 107 | **>INR 25 lakh crore** |

Those are **day-one** adds, not what those stocks are worth today. For this month's debuts and premiums, see [November 2026 IPOs](/articles/ipo/upcoming-ipos-november-2026). For Reliance's parent-company move around the Jio listing week, see [why Reliance shares jumped](/articles/ipo/reliance-share-price-jump-nov-4).

## What was happening on the tape

Into the 5 Nov print, ET also flagged:

- Sensex and Nifty each **+8.1%** over **six** consecutive sessions,
- MidCap 150 **+8.4%** in eight of nine sessions; SmallCap 250 **~+7%** in seven of eight,
- Crude **−19%** over **three** sessions (easing inflation and import-bill worries),
- FPI net inflows **over $3.4 billion** in **12** sessions,
- softer uncertainty after the [US midterms](/articles/ipo/us-midterm-results-indian-it-stocks) and better-than-expected Q2 earnings.

That mix is cyclical. ET's quoted caution (Master Capital's Ravi Singh) is the usual one: geopolitics, crude reversals and profit-booking after a sharp run can cap further upside.

## What it means for you

- **If you track "is the market at a high?":** ask **which** market. Total mcap, Sensex and your portfolio can disagree.
- **If you follow IPOs:** mega issues change the exchange total even when they never enter the Sensex. That is a feature of how mcap is summed, not a judgment on the IPO.
