New to loans? Start with the [loans guide](/loans). This page gives you **a simple plan to raise your credit score**, and what to avoid.

## The short answer

Your score improves when lenders see you handle credit well over time. The 7 steps below cover almost everything. **Paying on time** and **keeping card use low** do most of the work.

## What moves your score

| Factor | What it means | How much it matters |
|---|---|---|
| **Payment history** | Did you pay every EMI and card bill on time? | Most |
| **Credit use** | How much of your card limit do you use? | A lot |
| **Length of history** | How long have you had credit? | Some |
| **Credit mix** | Do you have both loans and cards? | A little |
| **New applications** | How often have you applied recently? | A little |

The exact formula is secret and differs by bureau, but these are the main factors every bureau uses.

## The 7 steps

### 1. Never miss a payment

This matters more than anything else. One missed EMI or card bill can drop your score noticeably.

- **Set up autopay** for at least the minimum due on every card and EMI.
- **Then pay the full card bill** before the due date.
- **Already behind?** Clear the overdue amount now. The sooner it is cleared, the less damage.

### 2. Use less than 30% of your card limit

If your card limit is INR 1 lakh, try to keep your balance under **INR 30,000**. Under INR 10,000 is even better.

<div data-callout="jargon" data-title="Credit utilisation in one line">

**Credit utilisation** = your card balance / your total card limit. Using INR 45,000 of a INR 1,50,000 limit is 30%. Lower is better. More in the [glossary](/glossary/credit-utilization).

</div>

**Easy ways to lower it:**

- Pay part of your bill **before** the statement date, so a smaller balance gets reported.
- Spread spends across two cards.
- Ask your bank for a higher limit, then do not spend more.

### 3. Keep old cards open

Your oldest card shows how long you have handled credit. Closing it can shorten your history and cut your total limit. If it has no annual fee, keep it and use it for a small bill each month.

### 4. Apply only when you need to

Each loan or card application adds a **hard enquiry** to your report. Several in a few months look like you are desperate for credit.

- Compare offers first, then apply to **one or two** lenders.
- Use "check eligibility" tools that use a soft check.

### 5. Do not settle a loan if you can avoid it

A **"settled"** status means you paid less than you owed. It can hurt your score for years. If you are struggling, talk to your lender early about a longer tenure or a lower EMI instead. See [your rights as a borrower](/articles/loans/home-loan-borrower-rights-rbi).

### 6. Fix errors in your report

Mistakes are common: a loan that is not yours, a late payment you never made, or a closed loan still shown as open. Dispute them free on the bureau's site. RBI says it must be fixed within 30 days. ### 7. Have a healthy mix (but do not borrow just for it)

Lenders like to see you handle both a card and a loan well. But **never take a loan only to improve your score**. On-time card payments alone can build a strong score.

## Starting with no credit history?

If you have never had a loan or card, you may have **no score** yet. To start:

- **Get a beginner credit card**, use it for small spends and pay in full. See [best credit cards for beginners](/articles/credit-cards/best-credit-cards-for-beginners) and the [lifetime-free starter guide](/articles/credit-cards/idfc-first-lifetime-free-starter-guide).
- **Try a secured card** against a fixed deposit if you cannot get a regular card.
- **Be patient.** A score usually appears after about 6 months of use.

## Mistakes that hurt your score

- Paying only the **minimum due** month after month. It keeps your balance high. See [the minimum-due trap](/articles/credit-cards/credit-card-fees-and-minimum-due-trap).
- **Maxing out** a card, even if you pay it later.
- **Co-signing or guaranteeing** a loan for someone who then misses payments. Their late EMIs show on your report too.
- **Ignoring small dues**, like a INR 500 card fee. Unpaid, it can be reported as overdue.
- **Applying for many cards** to get welcome offers.

## How long does it take?

| Situation | Rough time to see improvement |
|---|---|
| High card balance, now paid down | 1 to 2 months |
| Error in report, now fixed | About 1 to 2 months after the dispute |
| A few late payments in the past | 6 to 12 months of on-time payments |
| Loan settled or written off | Several years; paying the full amount can help |
| No history, first card | About 6 months for a first score |

## Why it is worth the effort

A better score means easier approvals and a **lower interest rate**. On a INR 50 lakh home loan, the difference between a good and an average score can be lakhs of rupees in interest. See [what credit score you need for a loan](/articles/loans/credit-score-for-loan).
