## The 80C rule that shapes everything

Section 80C is a single combined limit across many instruments. Spreading money across several 80C products does not raise the ceiling, so the real question is not "which qualifies" but "which of these do I actually want to own?" Pick instruments that serve a genuine goal and happen to save tax, not the other way round.

## The options, ranked by everyday usefulness

### 1. ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme)
Equity mutual funds with the shortest lock-in among 80C options. Best for long-term growth if you can accept market ups and downs. Strong default for younger investors.

### 2. EPF and VPF
For salaried employees, EPF contributions already count toward 80C, and you can add through VPF. Safe, steady, and often the easiest way to fill part of the limit without new products.

### 3. PPF (Public Provident Fund)
Long lock-in, government-backed, tax-friendly returns. Excellent for safe long-term savings and a good complement to equity.

### 4. Home loan principal
If you have a home loan, the principal repayment counts toward 80C automatically, often filling much of the limit on its own.

### 5. Tax-saving fixed deposits and NSC
Safe, fixed returns with a lock-in. Fine for conservative savers, though returns are usually lower than PPF over long periods.

### 6. Life insurance premiums
Premiums for [term insurance](/term-life-insurance) qualify. Buy term for protection and let the deduction be a bonus. Avoid buying bundled savings-linked insurance purely to use 80C; see [term vs ULIP vs endowment](/articles/term-life-insurance/term-vs-ulip-vs-endowment).

## How to build your 80C mix

1. Count what already qualifies: EPF, home-loan principal, and existing term premiums.
2. Fill the remaining gap with instruments that match your goals: ELSS for growth, PPF for safety.
3. Avoid last-minute purchases of products you would not otherwise want.
4. Confirm the current-year limit and your regime before committing.

## Do not forget the regime check

If the new regime works out better for you, most 80C deductions do not apply. Run both computations in the [income tax calculator](/tools/income-tax-calculator) before you invest for tax reasons.
