# IPOs in India

> An IPO lets you buy a company's shares before they list. Read the offer document, know which quota you fall in, apply with UPI or ASBA before the deadline, and ignore grey market chatter. Our Jio Platforms IPO guides cover India's largest issue, which is open for bids from 21 to 23 October 2026.

How IPOs work in India, in plain English: offer documents, price bands, retail and HNI quotas, applying by UPI, allotment, listing and tax, plus our full Jio Platforms IPO coverage.

## The Jio Platforms IPO

Jio Platforms Limited filed its red herring prospectus on 14 October 2026. The issue is a fresh issue of up to 27 crore shares at INR 1,065 to INR 1,119, open for bids from Wednesday 21 to Friday 23 October 2026, with listing on NSE and BSE expected on or about 28 October. Start with the hub:

## How IPOs work

A company files a draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) with SEBI, gets SEBI's observations, then files a red herring prospectus (RHP) with dates and quotas. Investors bid in lots within a price band, and shares list three working days after the issue closes. Read the full walk-through in [how IPOs work in India](/articles/ipo/how-ipos-work-india).

## Quotas and applying

Under SEBI's rules for profitable companies, at least 35% of the net issue goes to retail investors bidding up to INR 2 lakh, at least 15% to non-institutional investors (HNIs) and up to 50% to institutions. Some issues also reserve shares for employees or for shareholders of a parent company.

- [How to apply for the Jio IPO](/articles/ipo/how-to-apply-jio-ipo): UPI and ASBA, step by step.

You pay through ASBA: the money stays in your bank account, blocked, until allotment. Most retail investors use UPI through a broker app. For how UPI works and what it costs, see our [banking guide](/banking).

## Allotment, listing and tax

- [Tax on IPO listing gains](/articles/ipo/ipo-listing-gains-tax): selling within 12 months means 20% short-term capital gains tax.

Listing gains are taxable income. Our [tax planning guide](/tax-planning) covers ITR forms and advance tax.

## Where IPOs fit in your money plan

An IPO is one stock. If you are building long-term wealth, a few IPO allotments matter far less than your savings rate and asset allocation. See our [FIRE guide](/fire) for the bigger picture, and keep an emergency fund in the bank before you put money into any single share.
