Look beyond the monthly EMI
Extending tenure makes a personal loan look more affordable each month but increases total interest. Compare total of all EMIs plus upfront charges across offers.
A processing fee deducted from disbursal means you receive less cash than the sanctioned principal while repaying the full amount. That raises the effective cost above the headline interest rate.
Methodology
- EMI uses the fixed monthly reducing-balance formula.
- Each month's interest is calculated on the outstanding principal.
- Processing fee is estimated as a percentage of principal and kept outside the EMI.
Scope and assumptions
- There are no prepayments, missed-payment charges or rate changes.
- GST on fees, insurance and lender-specific charges are excluded.
- The lender's annual percentage rate and key facts statement are the final source for total cost.
FAQ
How is personal loan EMI calculated?
EMI is calculated from principal, monthly interest rate and number of monthly instalments using the reducing-balance formula. The payment stays constant while the interest share falls.
Does the processing fee change my EMI?
Not when paid or deducted upfront, which is the assumption here. It still increases your effective borrowing cost because you repay the full principal while receiving less net cash.
Will a longer tenure lower my EMI?
Yes, but it normally increases total interest. Use the graph and total repayment figure to judge the trade-off.
Can I use this for a flat-rate personal loan?
No. This calculator uses reducing-balance interest. A flat-rate quote calculates interest on the original principal throughout and should be converted before comparison.
Does prepayment reduce personal loan interest?
Usually yes because it cuts outstanding principal, but lenders may impose a lock-in period or charge. This calculator does not model prepayment; check the loan agreement or key facts statement.
